After finalising a pre-draft signing, Sophie Devine will play for the Perth Scorchers in the WBBL for a minimum of two more seasons. In the previous season’s draft, Devine was chosen by the Scorchers before Marizanne Kapp, despite Melbourne Renegades’ best efforts to acquire the captain of New Zealand.
With 489 runs at 37.61, including a century against Brisbane Heat, and 14 wickets taken, she had another successful campaign. The Scorchers advanced to the Challenger final but were defeated by Heat.
After Beth Mooney and Elyse Villani, Sophie Devine is the third-highest run scorer in WBBL history for the Scorchers.
“Returning to Perth was an obvious choice for me,” Devine stated. “I have built such a special connection with the players and staff over the past four seasons, and I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.”
Although Mooney’s new deal with the Scorchers has not yet been announced, it is anticipated that the Australia opener will stay with the team. During the off-season, they also acquired Mikayla Hinkley from the Brisbane Heat.
The English trio Amy Jones, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Lauren Winfield-Hill were also abroad players for the Scorchers in the previous season. Due to her busy international itinerary, Sciver-Brunt has previously informed the BBC that she will not be submitting a nomination for the event this season.
The WBBL begins seven days after the T20 World Cup is scheduled to conclude, and England’s trip to South Africa falls within the tournament’s final stretch in late November.
