Despite Zimbabwe’s exclusion from the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, skipper Sikandar Raza believes there is a great chance to rebuild the national squad. He talked candidly about bringing in new talent with the goal of long-term success across all media.
The recent journey to Bangladesh offered a glimpse of Zimbabwe’s efforts to provide young people opportunities. All-rounder Brian Bennett, making his debut, was crucial. Despite the visitors’ 4-1 series loss, rookie all-arounder Brian Bennett emerged as Player of the Match in the fifth game with 70 runs and two wickets claimed.
“This is the plan. We want to rebuild the team because we are not going to the World Cup. We aim to safeguard all three forms of our future. In ODIs and Tests, the senior players will be around for a little while longer, but in T20s, we’re attempting to assemble a fresh squad. According to the Times of India, Raza stated, “The long-term goal is for these guys to gain the confidence from T20s to filter into ODIs and Tests.”
“I can assure those young people that, despite our best efforts, the qualifiers didn’t work out. Right instruction is still provided for people entering the changing room. If you youngsters ever have to play the qualifications, maybe our counsel and direction will help you get over that obstacle and make it to the World Cup,” he continued.
I’m quite happy with how I performed: Brian Bennett
The Sikandar Raza-led team gave younger talents like Bennett, Jonathan Campbell, and Tadiwanashe Marumani opportunity during the Bangladesh tour by resting veterans like Sean Williams, Ryan Burl, and Craig Ervine on occasion. Bennett was pleased by his ability to bat in three different positions and his bat and ball skills.
“I’m really happy with how I performed. This one is for my mother because it’s Mother’s Day. I’m happy it was released today. I don’t mind where I bat in the order. I don’t bat from a certain position. Bennett stated, “I can go about my regular business during or after the powerplay.
Sikandar Raza believes Zimbabwe can save itself the heartache of missing out on this year’s T20 event and failing in future World Cup qualifiers by investing in the next generation now.
“Zimbabwe plays exceptionally well in qualifiers, but we all tend to falter in the game that matters most. “Our goal is to secure direct qualification and avoid having to participate in these qualifiers once more,” Raza stated in closing.
