The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time champions, enjoyed a fantastic IPL 2023 season. Despite a terrible performance in 2022, the ‘Men in Yellow’ recovered by making sure the team had everything it needed. They appear to have all the bases covered for the upcoming season as well, courtesy of the management. Significantly, the limited overs scenario has altered with the ODI World Cup.
Some of the biggest stars in the circuit have been shown to have serious fitness problems in certain cases. Furthermore, additional names have also risen to the occasion. Now that the teams are trying to assemble the ideal team for the next IPL season, it is imperative that the management let go of the players who are having trouble playing. These trade-offs are more difficult to understand than they seem because the players may perform quite well.
The three players that CSK may release before the 2024 Indian Premier League are as follows:
1. Sisanda Magala
Following his selection for the national team, Sisanda Magala has had difficulties. Six T20 matches for South Africa and two IPL contests for CSK feature him. But with big winners of matches on both teams, Magala was left to warm the benches.
In terms of his IPL statistics, he was included in the starting lineup in the competition’s early stages. He has taken just one wicket at an economy rate of 8.50 in his two games. CSK appears to have assembled the ideal playing eleven, and Magala’s release is likely to occur before the 2024 Indian Premier League.
Although the circumstances and result suggest that CSK might not be the ideal team for the pacer, things might have turned out differently if MS Dhoni had given him more opportunities. Rather, he will be better suited in a squad without a pacer. His wealth of domestic cricket expertise will undoubtedly aid in his success.
2. Dwaine Pretorius
Pretorius joined CSK at the 2022 mega auction and had a good run with the team the following year as well. The all-around South African player took Dwyane Bravo’s place in the team. Nevertheless, it appears like CSK may not require his services in the long run.
Pretorius had an amazing strike rate of 157.14 in 2022, scoring 44 runs in six games. Furthermore, he was able to secure six wickets for the team. Nevertheless, with just one chance in 2023, MS Dhoni did not include him in the side. This suggests that the management has decided on a starting lineup for the long term.
Pretorius’ status as an overseas player is the primary problem with him playing for CSK. Furthermore, since there won’t be a huge auction, the management now plans to stick with the ideal lineup for the upcoming season. Pretorius appears to need to find a new team that will support his development as a cricket player.
3. Ben Stokes
When he sold for an incredible 16.25 crores in the 2023 IPL auction, Ben Stokes captured the interest of the cricket community last year. He was brought in to take Bravo’s place and was an all-round player as well. Nevertheless, throughout the season, ailments hindered his progress.
A mere two games played is a sign of subpar fitness for a player of Stokes’ caliber. Since Stokes is an unstoppable force when he is at full power, the CSK administration should be more concerned about this. That has been seen by his performance with the Rising Pune Supergiants, his previous team. Sadly, Stokes was unable to do the same for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2023 campaign.
Furthermore, following the 2023 ODI World Cup, Stokes is expected to have surgery. This suggests that Stokes may have injury issues this time around as well. Not fantastic news for CSK, a squad that relies heavily on experience and having all-round players. Because of this, the CSK management team may decide to let him go just in time for the 2024 season.
