On Sunday, July 30, at the Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, the fourth season of the Lanka Premier League got underway with a thrilling match between the Jaffna Kings and the Colombo Strikers. Notably, the game was a rematch of the previous season’s championship game, which the Kings won by two wickets to claim a hat-trick of LPL titles.
The Jaffna Kings, who were led by Thisara Perera and lost the toss in the tournament’s opening match, were therefore given the opportunity to bat first. The Kings scored 173 in the first innings thanks in large part to Twohid Hridoy’s performance (54 off 39). The Strikers claimed one wicket each from Naseem Shah, Matheesha Pathirana, Chamika Karunaratne, and Lakshan Sandakan.
Despite losing two wickets early, the Colombo Strikers’ response got off to a strong start. With 58 points off 34, including nine boundaries and one six, captain Niroshan Dickwella set the tone for his team. The defending champions have heavily relied on Hardus Viljoen, who finished with statistics of 3/31. As Jaffna Kings restricted their opponents by 152 in 19.4 overs, Dilshan Madushanka and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth each took two wickets.
