With the end of the T20 World Cup 2024, Paras Mhambrey‘s term as India’s bowling coach came to an end. In November 2021, he became a member of head coach Rahul Dravid’s coaching team. He guided an already potent Indian bowling assault to unprecedented heights.
Several supporters voiced their concerns about Team India’s decision to employ three left-arm spinners in the opening games of the T20 World Cup. Mhambrey said that the team knew how the West Indies pitches would perform when questioned about the choice to make it.
Since drop-in pitches were being used for the event, he believed that the pitches in the USA were entirely foreign. Mhambrey further disclosed that Team India would not have fared well in the competition if it hadn’t had even one of their spinners.
“We were aware of the behaviour of the pitches in the West Indies. We anticipated sufficient wear and tear from the considerable amount of cricket played. Because the US used drop-in pitches and it was difficult for everyone, it was absolutely foreign to us. Win totals ranged from 100 to 120 there. But we knew what to anticipate from the West Indies. According to Paras Mhambrey, “We knew it would turn and you needed someone to attack the stumps,” he stated in a Venkata Krishna B interview.
They were an amazing bundle: Paras Mhambrey
Paras Mhambrey further discussed how the side gained an additional advantage because to the batting prowess of Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja. He also emphasised the part Kuldeep Yadav performed for the Men in Blue during the competition.
“Having Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja both capable of batting adds depth to both bowling and batting.” Being left-handed hitters, they had an advantage even in matchups. We were aware of their responsibilities. They made a fantastic package. Subsequently, Kuldeep Yadav provided an alternative perspective. We would have struggled without even one of the four spinners that Rahul and Rohit (Sharma) selected, Mhambrey added.
