2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Wasim Jaffer selects a “attacking batter” to replace Pujara

2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Wasim Jaffer selects a "attacking batter" to replace Pujara

Wasim Jaffer, a former cricketer for India, believes that Shreyas Iyer, a current player for India, would be a “excellent” replacement for seasoned one-drop Test hitter Cheteshwar Pujara. Iyer and Pujara are both on the Indian team competing in the present Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.

Wasim Jaffer lavished Iyer with accolades for his prowess in Test matches. Jaffer describes Iyer as someone who is skilled at quickly and purposefully scoring runs.

India presently holds a 2-0 advantage in the four-match Test series and has successfully defended its title. They appear to be in good form and are predicted to completely dominate the visiting Australian team. Australia’s performance in the first two Test games of the series has been below average.
Jaffer supports Iyer as Pujara’s replacement, saying that “He’s the greatest alternative” “Consider Shreyas Iyer to be the ideal candidate to replace Cheteshwar Pujara at No. 3. He is an attacking hitter and has batted at No. 3 for Mumbai. India will benefit greatly if someone can bat at No. 3 and score aggressively, putting the bowlers on the back foot. Pujara has excelled at No. 3, “the 45-year-old noted while addressing in a video uploaded on his YouTube page.

The former opener believed that the No. 3 spot in the batting order in Test cricket was absolutely essential to maintaining a team’s balance and ensuring posting high totals or creating a foundation while chasing challenging targets.

Iyer hasn’t harmed his reputation in any way. He has excelled as the third batter. He can occupy the scoring position for longer periods of time and increase the rate as needed.

Cheteshwar Pujara was also singled out for praise by Jaffer, who noted that the experienced batsman had served as India’s No. 3 batsman for an extended period of time. India has benefited from Pujara’s ability to stay at the wicket for hours while continuing to score crucial runs on multiple occasions.

Whenever the 35-year-old cricketer retires, it is crucial for the Indian team management to select a suitable replacement.

Pujara became just the seventh Indian batsman to play in 100 Test matches for his nation. But he does not have age on his side. Shreyas Iyer just started his Test career, having played his first home series match against New Zealand in 2021. In that series, the 28-year-old was outstanding.

After a nine-day break, India is currently facing Australia in the third Test at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
