An official from the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced on Tuesday (August 23) that the Women’s Asia Cup in 2022 will be hosted in Bangladesh at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in that country. The seven-team competition will take place from the 1st to the 16th of October.
“We will host the Asia Cup at Sylhet, and since we have successfully held ICC events, we are very hopeful that we can organise the tournament over there,” BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury told Cricbuzz on Tuesday. Chowdhury was speaking on behalf of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Since the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup in 2014, Sylhet has not played host to any women’s international matches; this will be the city’s debut appearance in the Asia Cup in 2022. The competition also represents the return of women’s international cricket in the country, considering that Bangladesh have not hosted any team since Pakistan’s tour of the country in October of 2018.
Participating nations include the hosts, India and Pakistan, as well as Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates. Nizamuddin remarked, “We will have games in both the stadiums considering there will be seven teams playing and there is a question of giving rest to the wicket.”
Following their nail-biting victory over India in the 2018 Asia Cup final, Bangladesh will be seeking to successfully defend their title in this year’s competition.
