Sunil Gavaskar, a former India cricketer, has stated that India batsman Virat Kohli would be a lock for his T20I squad, given his impressive form in the format. Notably, the batter enjoyed a splendid performance for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.
The flamboyant right-hander amassed 639 runs in 14 IPL 2023 appearances, including six fifties and two centuries. Though it was questioned whether Kohli should return to the national T20I squad, Gavaskar provided a straightforward response based on his current form.
“Based on his present form, I would include Kohli in my T20I squad for India’s upcoming matches in the format. He has two centuries (in IPL 2023). Even scoring 50 is difficult in T20 cricket, let alone achieving two hundreds. This exceptional batsman has scored two hundreds. If India were to play a T20 match in June of this year, I would select him without hesitation, Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
Prior to the following T20 World Cup, it is necessary to observe form: Sunil Gavaskar
According to reports, the BCCI is working on a plan to restructure the T20Is and build a new squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be hosted in the West Indies and the United States. However, Gavaskar emphasized that the players’ form must be monitored during the upcoming IPL season prior to the T20 World Cup.
“If we are discussing an upcoming T20 international, say India’s match in June, then he (Kohli) undoubtedly fits into the team, given the form that he has displayed. “However, in regards to the 2024 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and the United States, we must first observe the form of players in the IPL before discussing World Cup squad selection,” he added.
