During Match 43 of the IPL 2023 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, veteran wrist spinner Amit Mishra overtook Lasith Malinga’s record of 170 wickets to move into third place on the list of all-time wicket-takers in the annals of the Indian Premier League.
Amit Mishra was reintroduced into the assault in the 15th over of the first inning of the match between the Lucknow Super Giants and RCB after bowling the seventh over of the first inning. The 40-year-old dismissed Suyash Prabhudesai on the third delivery of the over, getting him caught at long-off for the 171st wicket of his IPL career, displacing Malinga from third place.
In the 17th over of the innings, Amit Mishra took the prized scalp of RCB captain Faf du Plessis, bringing his total to 172.
The wrist-spinner completed his three-over spell with figures of 2/21, which helped LSG restrict RCB to 126/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
In his 15-year IPL tenure, Mishra has participated in 160 matches and taken 172 wickets at an average of 23.75 and an economy of 7.34, including one five-wicket haul. Mishra also holds the distinction for the most hat tricks taken in the history of the Indian Premier League, having accomplished the feat three times in the 2008, 2011 and 2013 editions, respectively.
Notably, Dwayne Bravo holds the record for the most wickets in IPL history with 183 scalps from 161 matches, with Yuzvendra Chahal in second place with 178 scalps from 148 matches.
To win, the Lucknow Super Giants require 127 runs.
In the match between LSG and RCB, Faf du Plessis, captain of RCB, won the toss and elected to bat first on a sluggish surface in Lucknow. The renowned opening pair of Virat Kohli and du Plessis had a cautious start, scoring 62 runs off 53 balls before Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Kohli with the final delivery of the ninth over.
As a result of the dryness of the ground, the LSG bowlers had a field day, taking as many as nine wickets. Naveen-ul-Haq (3/30), Ravi Bishnoi (2/21), Krishnappa Gowtham (1/10, 2 overs), and Mishra all took wickets as RCB reached 126/9 in 20 overs. With 44 runs scored off of 40 deliveries, captain du Plessis led his team in scoring.
