With the 16th season of the Indian Premier League underway and T20 fever sweeping the nation, numerous reports of betting have also surfaced from all around the nation. According to reports, a gambler from Hyderabad recently got in touch with cricketer Mohammed Siraj to try and win back some of his lost money.
The driver reportedly requested some confidential information from Mohammed Siraj on Team India before Australia touched down in India for the official visit, according to sources in The New Indian Express. Before the actual tour, the pacer reported the incident to the BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).
According to the reports, the cyber police received the information right away and, working closely with the BCCI and ACU, were able to apprehend the suspect. The defendant got in touch with Siraj and requested his assistance in order to help him win money at gambling. According to a BCCI source, the individual was a driver in Hyderabad and not a bookie.
“A bookie didn’t approach Mohammed Siraj. It is a motorist from Hyderabad with a gambling addiction. He went to Siraj seeking inside information after suffering a significant loss. Siraj promptly reported the approach. The police have taken the individual into custody. More information is anticipated, according to a top BCCI source.
Following the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, BCCI strengthened its ACU unit.
In the years following the 2013 IPL spot-fixing controversy, in which Sreesanth, Ankit Chavan, and Ajit Chandila were detained with the former CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan, BCCI strengthened its ACU work.
Now, there is a dedicated ACU official for each team who stays in the same hotel and is on the ground keeping an eye on all the moves. Players must attend a required ACU training where they learn about dos and don’ts. If a player fails to report an approach, they will be disciplined.
Notably, the International Cricket Council’s ACU banned Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan from all forms of cricket in 2019 for a year because he failed to report a bookie approach during his time playing in the IPL in 2018 and the Tri-Series in Zimbabwe that same year.
